World Maritime Day: History

Back in 1948, an international conference was organised in Geneva where a special convention was passed on establishing the IMO, an agency under the United Nations. It was made to maintain and develop a comprehensive regulatory framework for the shipping industry.

The main aim behind the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is to improve and work on legal issues, environmental issues, maritime efficiency, maritime safety as well as technical cooperation. For the first time, it was celebrated on 17th March 1978.

World Maritime Day 2023 Theme

Every year UN announce a new theme to highlight its work more effectively. This year’s theme will be “MARPOL at 50 – Our commitment goes on”.It aims to bring people’s attention to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).
